Final assignments for the Graphic Arts subject

 

As a final assignment for the Graphic Arts subject each of the students has been working on something, with both a theoretical and an experimental approach, related to the procedures and techniques seen during the sessions. Some of the topics addressed were bindery, screen printing, risography, marbling, printing on silk, or eco-friendly printing.

We made presentations in class, so we could share the conclusions we reached and learn from each other’s experiences. It was truly useful, and very interesting.

Some of the presentations that stood out were:

  • Risography (Happy accidents), by Emily Eldridge.

Emily explores risography visiting workshops and through her own work as an illustrator. She explains what the technique is about, how does the machinery work, what role plays the color in it, and which possibilities it can offer (such as overprinting, or the register errors referred as “happy accidents”).

 

  • Experimentation with the marbling technique, by Laura Magallón.

Laura explains the history behind marbling, a technique for decorating paper in a way that resembles marble, as well as all the steps she goes through to print with this technique. She talks about materials, colors, supports and mediums, and shares the problems and solutions she faced during the process.

 

 

 

– Liquid typography, by Daniel Iglesias.

Daniel experiments with marbling too, but with an intention to use the results to create letters with a liquid effect. He takes examples from Sergi Delgado and Alex Trochut, who work with typography in unconventional ways, and develops his own system, trying different materials to see wich one works best. With the images obtained and some post production he gets impressive results.

 

Typography and IT Resources

 

Salvador Huertas teaches both basic notions of typography and familiarisation with design-related software such as Indesign, Photoshop or Illustrator.

The “Poster” project was about choosing a typography and playing with it, working on hierarchies and on its expressive potential. The elements worked upon were composition, the tension generated by blank spaces, columns and modules, integration of graphic elements, functionality and legibility.

As a result we got the posters you can see below. Not bad at all!

 

Visit to the Vanguard Gràfic printing house

 

In November the students paid a visit to Vanguard Gràfic printing house, one of the most prestigious in the city, with more than 100 years of history.

They had a chance to see the machinery in action, along with offset plates, die cutters and other tools used in this profession. Later they met Josep Amat, who told them about materials, different projects, and tips for being better at solving design-related problems.

It was an opportunity to talk through doubts, to get an idea of how does a printing house work, and to highlight the importance of an understanding between the designer and the printer.

 

 

Digital Video

Diego Fernández, professor of the subject of Digital Video, presents to the students the techniques and resources of the creation of video and animation destined to the network. In this subject they work on learning the characteristics of digital video, its editing, the interactivity, a introduction to 3D animation and a introduction to audio processing.

Web Projects

The subject of Web Projects, taught by Professor Anna Fuster, presents the development of the layout in HTML and CSS of a web project. Throughout the course the students work on the approach and obtaining a functional prototype, going through a graphic proposal, layout and installation on a server.

Students learn the specificities of design for the digital medium. How to raise a briefing, interaction design and information architecture. In this edition, the students have implemented the website of the prototype done in the subject of Analysis and management of digital publications, resulting in a redesign of the websites of several selected museums.

Introduction to Programming

Professors Jordi Collell and Oriol Collell have been responsible for carrying out the teaching of the Introduction to Programming subject. This subject aims to provide students with a base knowledge of the programming language. In this way they can know the complexity of the projects online, make good approaches, get a fluid communication with the professional environment and take full advantage of the technical possibilities.

Students learn how Java Script works, PHP and MySQL notions, and the practical functioning of JQuery libraries. During the course different practices are made that provide the students with useful resources for possible projects. One of them has been using the GreenSock TweenMax library.

User-Centered Design

The User-Centered Design (DCU) is a design approach that takes into account the final recipient of the product or service, the activity that is developed, as well as the contexts of use. Within the subject of Analysis and management of digital publications, the students of the master have worked with professor Enric Mor aspects of the DCU through dynamics, activities and a project of redesigning a museum web.

One of the first activities in class was the design of a wallet or purse. The objective of the activity was to make the product thinking directly to a classmate.

Through an iteration process, the students asked the needs and posed problems with possible solutions. In this way, the final result was more and more adjusted to success. Finally the activity concluded with a debate on the best product: the one that best solved the need of the user in question.

An important process in the design of any online platform or an app is to take into account the Scenarios. In them, the designer reflects on possible plausible situations in which a typical user might find himself using the product. This is a very important process when working with the User Experience (UX)

This time the class activity consisted in designing in a very visual way a scenario for a particular app. The functionality of the app consisted of a system designed to find, through the collaboration of people, your lost pet.

Iterative Design is a design methodology based on a cyclical process of prototyping, testing, analysis and refinement of a product or process. Based on the test results of the most recent iteration of a design, changes and improvements are made.

To practice and understand this operation, the Marshmallow Challenge was held in class. This is a team-building challenge that encourages the design mentality and supports the basic engineering principles. Each team is given the supplies to work – spaghetti, ribbon and rope – and in 18 minutes must build the highest possible tower that holds a marshmallow.

Finally, the final project of the subject consisted in the redesign of the website of a museum. Following the steps worked in class of the DCU, the students have made a report detailing the iterative process carried out step by step. Among them, the scenarios, information architecture, sketching, flow diagram and finally a functional prototype.

Infographics

Within the setting of the Analysis and Management of Digital Publications course, professor Diego Fernandez presented the content related to SEO and SEM in web search engines. In addition, as the subject’s project, students have worked about infographics and the power of communication that they represent within the network. The objective was to present an infographic based on something related to the virtual environment or the internet. Given this premise, they showed relevant data on the chosen topic in a graphical, synthesized and contextualized way.

Graphic Identity Projects

The subject taught by Xavier Alamany raises the conception of corporate identity projects as a communication phenomenon, which affects all the message formats that a company or institution issues. In this edition the demand has been the development of a project that will generate the local identity of the district of Montbau in Barcelona, using the tools of graphic design in a social and non-commercial way.

Considering the modular aspect of the neighborhood and the architectural importance of this, Irati creates a set of construction parts to make a miniature replica of Montbau buildings. It is a collaborative game between different generations in which they can know the neighborhood with another look.

In each box of the game there will be missing a piece that a player has hidden somewhere in the neighborhood singular for it. In order to finish the game, players must find the missing piece.

The design of the game focuses on the value of the absence, this one will be the thread of the game. The main goal is not setting up the neighborhood, but to discover where the other player has hidden the missing piece, because that will be an important place for the person.

In all the elements of the design we want to teach that something is missing. The mirror is the resource used for this.

Due to the constructivist nature architecture of the neighborhood that has its origins in the Russian avant-garde, Jose proposes a Biennial of experimental art in Montbau, linking that historical avant-garde with the current ones.

Observing the empty and free content of the rationalist architecture there is a modular pattern of organization, simplified in a mesh of pictures.

L-shaped volumes are displayed in the neighborhood, imitating the shape of the Montbau buildings. There is information on the use of the neighborhood for the upcoming biennial, times, galleries, premises and open spaces that are available for the exhibition of works of art.

Mengdi uses the graphic elements of this logo to create a graphic system and thus maintain the same style in future designs.

The proposal is to take advantage of as many green areas and public spaces of the Montbau district as possible, and thus encourage the residents of Montbau to change the lawn through gardens or small orchards.

The original concept of neighborhood construction is used as a community, based on equality for all inhabitants where each would receive an equal section of “arable land” and the advice of crop professionals. In this way the inhabitants of the neighborhood can plant their own fruits or vegetables more naturally and make the most of the green areas.

The objective is that people return to establish contact with the land as a support to a new social and micro-economic model of the crop and strengthen the coexistence of the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

Monika uses the postcard format to create the proportions of the logo. Classical 10×15 postcard format gives the 3×2 proportion. She adds the geometric forms of the rationalist architecture of Montbau that also symbolize the nature that surrounds the neighborhood. The Helvetica typography is simple and friendly, A sans serif font to embody the idea of modernity.

The module served to construct architecture of Montbau. Simple geometrical forms are inspired by ideas of functionalism and architectural drawings.

The important part of Montbau is its greenery. The green areas create their spirit and identity. It is also part of an architect’s idea.

Typography

Professor Salvador Huertas‘ subject aims to make an introduction to the architecture of the letter, typographical composition and analysis and critical evaluation of typographic letters. The final delivery of this subject has been a publication where the theme and format were free and essentially consisted in the treatment of typography and its composition.
